The Story Behind the Flutes

For 55 years, I have made flutes inspired by cultures from around the world—from instruments played in ancient times to Nature Flutes inspired by the holes woodpeckers placed in the bamboo growing in my own grove.

Over the years, my flute shop has amassed a wonderful collection of unusual and exotic flutes. Each of these instruments has been harvested from my bamboo grove. Some have natural scarring or a bend in the bamboo. Others are a little too wide or narrow for our regular market. They still look great and each one has its own character and music to share. Each instrument is tuned to itself!

Each Exotic Flute Set includes:

• Seven or eight exotic flutes

• Written playing lessons

• A flute bag with a shoulder strap

• Instruments that have been cleaned and freshly oiled before leaving the shop

Please note that some of the taller flutes will extend above the top of the bag. Some instruments also have protective bindings.

Only five Exotic Flute Sets are available. As each set sells, I will remove it from the website so you can easily see which sets remain.

Flute Set #1

Recommended for an adult small, medium, and large hands,

1. Egyptian Flute — A side-blown flute inspired by the 5,000-year-old Egyptian ney. Mellow, mysterious, and exotic.

2. Arabian Flute — Features a Middle Eastern Turkish scale also used in Klezmer and Gypsy music.

3. Small Poet’s Flute — A wonderfully creative and expressive little flute.

4. Nature Flute — Inspired by holes made by woodpeckers in the bamboo growing in my grove.

5. Calypso Flute — A major-scale flute with a Caribbean island feeling. Good for copying familiar songs and playing jazz.

6. End-Blown Ice Age Flute — Inspired by a thin bone flute discovered in a cave in Germany and originally made approximately 35,000–40,000 years ago.

7. Jiahu Crane Flute — Inspired by 9,000-year-old flutes discovered at the ancient settlement of Jiahu, China. Pentatonic scale.

8. Small Minor Flute — A bright and happy flute with a Renaissance feeling.

Flute Set #4

This collection includes flutes for both smaller and larger hands. It would be a wonderful set for two people to share or for a musical family.

2. End-Blown Oriental Flute — Inspired by the seventh-century Japanese shakuhachi. Pentatonic scale. Most comfortable for a larger hand.

5. Small Anasazi Flute — Inspired by an ancient flute discovered beneath a large stone in a Pueblo cliff dwelling and dated to approximately the year 624.

6. My Chinese Flute — This flute takes me to a misty mountain sunrise, where the music seems to express the soul of ancient China. Pentatonic scale.

7. Small Major Flute — Good for copying familiar songs.

8. Jiahu Crane Flute — Inspired by ancient flutes discovered at Jiahu, China. Pentatonic scale.
