The Story of the bamboo used in the Explore's Flute Set:

On August 27th 2020, I was retuning from a trip to meet my new granddaughter in Georgia. While there, I found bamboo to make flutes to help our Non Profit work in Nicaragua with special needs kids. As I got closer and closer to this other bamboo clump, my heart began to race. 3 times I pulled off the highway to see if that was the right exit. The third time did it. When I came into the patch I saw someone had cut a bunch of bamboo which laid on the ground. I took the 3 best canes to help with my September fundraiser.

The story of The Explorer's Flute Set bamboo continues...

The world traveling plant explorer, David Fairchild came to Japan in 1902 and met Uhei Suzuki who had come to Yokohama as a young man with his wife and small son along with a few small Bonsais that he created. He became the gardener of a foreign diplomat and then in 1882 he became the main collector and manager of the biggest nursery in Japan owned by Louis Boehmer. In 1893 Suzuki organized the Japanese nurserymen of Yokohama into the Yokohama Nursery and sold this Suvo Chiku (Now called Bambusa Multiplex Alphonse Karr)  to David Fairchild. Who ordered it again in 1908 and in 1916. During the early days of the 1900's Henry Flagler the railroad and hotel baron of Florida hired Fairchild to gather many horticulturalists to put in exotic plants on his hotel grounds. This bamboo was placed on his railroad property to get into the ground and in time would serve to create bamboo clumps for the hotels. Turns out that this clump was left alone for over 100 years. This old clump provided your flutes. I took 3 great canes that had been cut down and were waiting for an old flutemaker to rescue.

Fairchild one day wrote: "We need a pied piper who will take bamboo and plant it and learn what to do with it and how best to grow it. One who would dedicate his life to it." I feel I became that guy. This September 2020, I celebrate 50 years of flute making! Around 1992 I dug up 3 small canes from this special spot and planted it at my home. In time i was able to create a bamboo plantation from it and for the 3 decades have moved flutes around the world.

Another honor I had was to get a letter on Feb.7, 2020 from the Yokohama Nursery that communicated, "Dear Erik, I am Toshio Tsukada, currently responsible for Global Sales of the Yokohama Nursery. We are going to publish our Yokohama Nursery  130th anniversary book… Your work sounds very interesting to me and I would like to learn more. Thank you for your response. Best regards, Toshio Tsukada."

So the story of your flutes was about a young plant lover who stepped out and created a big wold wide nursery and one of his plants is offered to you today to touch someone else in the world.

On a crazy personal note a friend in Japan recently mentioned he found some of my flutes being offered at crazy expensive prices.  My Calypso flute was being sold for $800 where on my website I am offering it for $65. This whole flute set of 5 historical flutes is selling for $355.

And I only have 4 sets available!
